In the good old days a government grant was the only line of credit a student needed. In these more restricted times, students need to rely on other sources to fund life's essentials. And after the beer's paid for you may need an extra top up for rent, reading lists and rubbers (for correcting lecture notes...).

On a more serious note, anyone on a tight budget should use their credit card extremenly sparingly. It should not be seen as a payment method for the everyday expenses listed above. If used responsibly, a student credit card can help you build up a good credit rating for when you graduate. Equally, if used irresponsibly (for example, missed monthly payments), the negative impact on your credit rating can be significant.
