Remember, this is only a rough guide, so check out the details of each provider carefully before signing up;

Level 1. Basic Cover providing roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown. If the problem cannot be fixed by the road you and your vehicle will be taken to the nearest garage or to your home up to a set distance.

Level 2. The next level up removes the distance restriction and provides recovery of you, your vehicle and a set number of passengers to any one UK destination.

Level 3. Provides a mechanic to repair your car or fix problems at your home address if necessary.

Level 4. The  'premiere league' of breakdown cover. These packages offer additional security if your car cannot be fixed quickly; overnight accomodation, use of a hire car or rail tickets are typical benefits

Cover abroad is not normally provided as standard, but European breakdown cover can be added for an additional premium. If you are travelling with your car to the continent remember to check that your car insurance provides cover for driving abroad as well.
